Importing search results from NUcat into RefWorks

  1. Connect to NUcat and conduct your search.
  2. Mark the records that you would like to save by checking the boxes in the Titles display. If you are selecting records from multiple pages, be sure to click the box marked "Retain Marked Records" before moving to the next page.
  3. After you have finished marking records, scroll to the bottom of a Titles display page to the Print, Save & Email Options box.

  4. Under "Which Records?" select "Marked on this page" or, if you marked records from multiple pages, select "Marked from current search."
  5. Set the "Select Format:" pull-down menu to Long View, and then click Format to Print or Save. Your marked records are redisplayed in a plain text format.
  6. Select "Save As..." from your browser's File menu. Name your file and set the "Save as type:" pull-down menu to Text File. Make certain your file has the extension ".txt"—this will ensure that RefWorks can read the text file.
  7. Log into RefWorks, if you haven’t already, and click the Import button near the top of the screen. RefWorks Import button
  8. The Import Filter/Data Source menu should be set to “Northwestern University.” If it is not, open the pull-down menu and locate “Northwestern University”—it should be at the top of the list.
  9. Select “NUcat Long View (Northwestern University)” from the Database menu.
  10. Make sure the radio button marked “Import Data from the following Text File” is selected, and then use the Browse button to locate the text file you saved from NUcat.
  11. Click the Import button near the bottom of the screen. (Do not click the Import button at the top of the screen! This will reset the page you’re currently looking at.)
  12. The import process begins. When it is finished, you’ll see a message like “Import completed - 4 references imported” (or however many were on your list). Click “View Last Imported Folder” to see your new references.
