What is EndNote?
EndNote is a software program designed to store and manipulate
bibliographic information. With EndNote you can:
- store references in one place
- keep reading notes linked to sources (no more index cards!)
- download citations directly from databases
- automatically format bibliographies and citations in MLA, APA,
Chicago Manual of Style, or over 1000 other styles.
How can I get EndNote?
Northwestern University licenses EndNote for all current Northwestern
students, faculty and staff with valid Net IDs. Download
EndNote from the E-Academy site below. Be certain to also download
and install the
NU
EndNote Toolkit which provides customized Connection Files, Import Filters
and Styles.
E-Academy

EndNote X1 is now available from E-Academy!
Attention Mac Users
- Mac users will need to download the Stuffit expander program to successfully install EndNote. Download this program here.
- Once you've downloaded the initial EndNote file from e-academy, you should get a file that says EndNoteX1-Installer.sit on your desktop. You should be able to open this file with Stuffit version 10.0 or higher
- If you are using Stuffit version 11.0 or higher, you may get an error message indicating that "The file does not appear to be compressed or encoded". In order to resolve this error, please rename the downloaded Stuffit file from EndNoteX1-Installer.sit to EndNoteX1-Installer.sitx .
- EndNote has released a patch that will allow Mac users with Word 2008 to use EndNote X1.
Customized files for NU users (NU Toolkit)
The NU Toolkit is a package of customized files that you will
be prompted to install when you download EndNote from E-Academy.
Updated
files
are available here when they become available.
Connection Files allow you to connect directly
to remote databases using EndNote's built in search function. These
customized files
allow NU users to connect to subscription databases. The NUcat and
TRANweb files are available to anyone.
Import Filters allow records from databases to
be formatted, then imported into an EndNote library. Import filters
are valuable when no connection files or direct export options
are available. Filters are available here for a handful
of popular databases that don't support connection files or direct
support.
Styles are used
to format the appearance of references in citations and bibliographies.
Direct Export to
EndNote is available in a growing number of databases.
Many more Connection Files, Import Filters
and Styles are included with EndNote, and can also be downloaded
from the official EndNote
web site.
