RefWorks Quick Start Guide

There are two methods you can use to bring references from NUcat into RefWorks: 1) you can search NUcat through the RefWorks interface; and 2) you can search NUcat directly, save your search results as a text file and import the file into RefWorks.

Searching NUcat through RefWorks

  1. In the Search Tools section on the left side of the RefWorks screen, click on In the Search Tools section on the left side of the RefWorks screen, click on In the Search Tools section on the left side of the RefWorks screen, click on In the Search Tools section on the left side of the RefWorks screen, click on “Search Online Database.”Search Online Database
  2. Select “Northwestern University” from the “Online Database to Search:” menu.
You have two choices for conducting searches: Quick Search and Advanced Search.
  3. Quick Search is a keyword search: the terms you enter will be searched in the title, author and subject heading fields in NUcat.

    Advanced Search
lets you specify where you want your search terms to appear. RefWorks uses the term “Descriptors” for subject terms. Other systems might call them “Subject Headings” or “Keywords.” They all mean the same thing.

  4. Construct your search and click the Search button. A new window will open with your search results.
  5. Check the boxes next to the references that you want to save, and then click the Import button in the dark gray bar, available both at the top and the bottom of the screen. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to import the selected records. Choose OK.
  6. The import process begins. When it is finished, you’ll see a message like “Import completed - 4 references imported” (or however many were on your list). Click OK to dismiss the message and return to your search results. When you’ve imported all the records you wish, you can close the Search Results window and return to your main RefWorks window.
  7. Click on the View Folder menu and select “Last Imported” to see your new references.

Unfortunately, the RefWorks online search of NUcat does not capture the call numbers used at the Northwestern University libraries. The call numbers you see in these records are generic and do not apply at Northwestern. You may want to edit these out after you’ve imported the records and add local call numbers by copying and pasting from the regular NUcat interface. Or, you may search NUcat using the regular web interface, and save your search results as a text file to import into RefWorks.
