eReserve Guidelines
eReserve provides assigned course materials to students electronically 24/7. It is a useful way to enhance accessibility to course materials.
I. Submitting Lists
A. Complete the eReserve Request form to submit your list. eReserve requires the submission of photocopies or electronic versions of the items to be offered online. Please provide full citations for all items submitted, including the source (book or journal).
B. To guarantee timely processing of items, please submit lists for each course at least three weeks before the needed date. Processing materials (and obtaining copyright clearance, if applicable) may take a considerable amount of time. Lists may be sent to e-reserve@northwestern.edu or brought directly to Reserve on 2N of University Library.
C. Specify the dates by which each item should be available to your students. Please note that we cannot process all your course readings at the beginning of term. Three week lead time is best.
D. A maximum of 20 items per course at a maximum of 45 pages per item may be placed on Reserve. Please notify us if a document has been used in Electronic Reserve during a past quarter, as archives files can be reactivated. (In this case, however, Reserve Services must always seek copyright permission for repeated use.)
E. All eReserve documents will be automatically deactivated and archived at the end of the term.
II. Access to eReserve
A. Access through NUcat - If you choose NUcat access, the eReserve items will be listed under the NUcat Course Reserve tab by Instructor/Course.
B. Access through Blackboard – If you choose Blackboard access, the items will not be posted in the Library's online catalog. Rather, Reserve will email each document's URL to the instructor or contact for inclusion on the appropriate Blackboard page. Reserve is NOT responsible for the construction or support of Blackboard pages; all technical support for Blackboard is handled through Academic Technologies (467-7046).
III. Format of Materials Submitted to eReserve
A. PAPER. If providing photocopies, please ensure they are high-quality and clear. Processing time, file size, and final image quality depend heavily on the quality of the photocopy. You can also submit the original source and we will photocopy / scan them for you. Please specify if you would like photocopies returned to you.
B. ELECTRONIC. Files can be submitted on disk, CD-ROM, or emailed as attachments to e-reserve@northwestern.edu
C. Requests for Video and Audio Streaming should be made through Digital Collections. http://www.library.northwestern.edu/dc/digitizationservices/streaming.html
IV. COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
Copyright law places some restrictions on Reserve use of copyrighted material, particularly use by eReserve. See Reserve Copyright for more information.
Main Library's eReserve follows the American Library Association's "Fair Use" guidelines.
10% of one book or a single article from a journal/periodical issue can be freely used. If you need to exceed these parameters, Reserve must request copyright permission from the publishers. Please note that publishers are generally more reluctant to grant copyright permission for electronic uses than for Regular Reserve.
Reserve will seek copyright permission for the reuse by the same instructor for the same course for the same items through eReserve.
