Printing from the Public Computer Workstations
FAQs:
Why is Schaffner Library instituting charges for printing?
The major factor driving the decision is the radical change in the online climate. Over the past several years vast amounts of library materials have become available electronically. The increasing availability of full-text articles and books online has blurred the distinction between photocopying (which has always been a fee-based service) and printing. Schaffner Library has experienced exponential cost increases related to free printing that continue to rise each year and can no longer be sustained.
Another important element in the decision is the amount of waste that the library sees on a daily basis. Patrons of the library routinely print documents they never pick up. Similarly, many patrons do not try to eliminate wasteful practices such as printing an entire website instead of the one page needed. We wish to encourage responsible printing to ensure a wise use of resources.
How much is charged for printing?
Simplex Printing (one-sided): 5 cents per sheet.
Duplex Printing (two-sided): 8 cents per sheet.
(Instructions for setting up double-sided printing are posted
at Schaffner computer workstations.)
Why charge 5 cents and 8 cents?
The 5 cent and 8 cent charge will encourage responsible printing without placing an undue burden on individuals. It will also ease the financial strain on the library. The charge will allow only for partial cost recovery. Beyond the obvious cost of paper and toner, the library also must pay for frequent equipment repair and replacement.
How do I pay for my prints?
Printing charges are deducted from the cash stripe on your WildCARD or Visitor Copy Card. Follow the instructions posted next to the print workstation in the Schaffner computer area to release and pay for your prints. You may use the Cash-to-Card machine in Schaffner Library to add value to your card and/or to purchase a Visitor Copy Card. You must pay with a WildCARD or Visitor Copy Card—no cash will be accepted.
What are my alternatives to printing?
You may email documents to yourself or copy them onto a floppy
disk or flash drive. In addition, Schaffner’s workstations
allow you to burn a CD-ROM. You can then print your documents on
your own printer or your department’s printer. Floppy disks,
blank CD-ROMs and flash drives are all available to purchase at
the bookstore in Abbott Hall.
