Tech Library: A Model for Tomorrow
Appendix W: Meeting with Marvin Lofquist – Associate Dean for Physical Environment, WCAS
We showed him our final design and asked for his comments.
- Unrealistic to keep all
the books as is on the 1st and 3rd floors for the
future of this library
- Must look for a better use of overall space
- Agrees it would be tough to do anything drastic with all the books now, but there doesn’t seem to be such a need for the books to be out for public use (taking up space) if they are hardly being used
- New space on campus is very expensive (about $500 per square foot) à imperative to find best use for all possible space
- Possible idea (special
for the future)
- Move all the books from the third to the first floor (by adding more stackable bookshelves on the first floor)
- Open third floor open for student space, lounges, labs, etc.
- Likes what we did with 2nd floor, turning it into more of a meeting/working space as opposed to a book storage space
- “Libraries” of
the present and future where people go
to do work are coffee shops, lounges, etc.
Our café area is a start but in the future it will probably be even more centered on cafés and informal meeting places
