Tech Library: A Model for Tomorrow
Appendix X: Meeting with Bob Davis - Associate Director of Academic Technologies
Purpose that renovations would serve:The changes that were made at the Northwestern Main Library were originally intended to create a comfortable and technical space that fostered group collaboration. They wanted the renovations to allot space for team conversation. However, they did not want the space to be “instructional” (Think the IE lab or other computer labs that have “smart” technology on campus). They wanted a more interactive and versatile space.
The library now includes:- large rounded tables
- areas with large plasma screens
- a project room with “smart” white board technology
- additional resident workstations with USB plug and electrical outlets accessible at each workstation
- wireless capability throughout
- lightweight chairs at workstations and in group areas on casters (wheels)
- extra chairs in case small groups want to work at one workstation, instead of a larger group area
The architect that designed the renovations that took place at the main library chose the lighting that was incorporated into their final design. The main feature of the lighting that was chosen (according to the architect) was that some light is sent directly down and some is reflected upward to illuminate the entire space more thoroughly. The more direct downward light (although covered) helps the space stay brighter than if reflective light only was used.
Weaknesses:
The original booths that were purchased for the main library renovation had Ethernet ports on the seats. A slight alteration has been made to this area by installing Ethernet ports upright on the table instead of on the seat.
The tables that are near the large plasma screens are going to be changed to a more circular shape, which they are hoping will increase comfort when working in these areas.
The large flat screen monitor in the booth work group area is going to be re-mounted on adjustable arms so that students can adjust the distance that the screen is from the booth. This will add to the versatility of this area. Also, the panel that separates the group work area is slightly “clumsy”.
The furniture companies that Northwestern currently has large contracts with are:- KI
- Steel Case
- Herman Miller
We should contact John Blosser, the library department head (who did a lot of the ordering for the main library renovations), to get additional information about ordering from these companies. He will probably have contact information for people at these companies.
Bob says if we need any more help from him don’t hesitate to call
