Tech Library: A Model for Tomorrow
Executive Summary
This project started as a way to address the library needs of students and faculty. Our focus has since shifted to create a place of collaboration so that teams of students can solve complex problems. We were given an inefficient space to work with. In order to create a more conducive learning space, we have removed all walls that are not load-bearing. This has helped us address student and faculty needs.
Six new group work rooms with state of the art technology have been created to help students finish those class projects which require much effort and time. Laptop carrels have been implemented to help with the transition to mobile computing. Fifty-four public access computers have been installed to help students write papers or do research. Smaller study tables are being used to minimize the number of empty seats that are currently a common feature of the Tech library. A virtual classroom has been created so that students can use state of the art technology in conjunction with their professor in order to solve problems.
All the computers will have standard MS Office software and access to online journals that the library subscribes to. The group work room computers will have all the engineering software that is needed by all majors. The rooms will also have a reservation system that will be available in two hour blocks.
Aesthetics are a key part to help the learning process. Contemporary furniture will be used to show that Tech library is a model for the future. Better lighting will also help students stay awake and not have strained eyes. New windows will replace the current ones which have a constant condensation problem. A mixture of glass, steel, and light wood will help to create a futuristic atmosphere.Back to Table of Contents
