| Since the old Court Library, housed in the Wittelsbach Royal Residence, had never been intended to house such large numbers of books and manuscripts, the masses of libraries and archives Aretin sent to Munich were stored for many years in the former Jesuit college (left) and the attic of the church of St. Michael, and also elsewhere in the city. The new Hof- und Staatsbibliothek, designed by Friedrich von Gärtner (design drawing below) and constructed between 1832 and 1843, finally provided the new collections with an adequate home, where they reside to this day.
