Special Libraries Division Mission Statement

The Special Libraries Division supports the overall mission of Northwestern University Library to provide information resources and services of the highest quality to sustain and enhance the University’s teaching, research, professional, and performance programs. The specific contributions of Special Libraries to the fulfillment of the mission of the Library as a whole include the creation and management of special, archival, and other curated collections in specific subject areas, uniting rich primary, original, rare, and unique materials in traditional and digital formats-among them text, manuscript, photograph, film, sound, and image-with strong and diverse collections of supporting published materials. The Special Libraries Division is committed to meeting the needs of the Northwestern community by promoting its resources through all available means and through advocacy of the use of primary and special materials in research and teaching. Essential to the accomplishment of this mission is a robust digitization program which develops customized strategies and platforms to make our collections accessible digitally, worldwide and in perpetuity. Beyond Northwestern, the libraries and the archives of the Special Libraries Division also serve regional, national, and international constituencies in ways appropriate to each.
