Hogarth's self-portrait of 1748/49, which predates the Analysis
by five years, already figures Hogarth as aesthetician. Flanked
on his right by his famous pug, Trump, and on his left by
his "Line of Beauty," the portrait rests on the
books which are the foundation of his identity as a theoretician.
