Le Brun's book was translated into English in 1734 and is
based upon a lecture he gave at the Royal Academy of Painting
in 1667. Both actors and artists consulted this book during
the eighteenth century as a tool for achieving the perfect
imitation of 'genuine' facial expression, using the extensive
typology of emotion that Le Brun sets forth as a model.
