Plate Preparation: filing the edges |
In order to avoid unintended marks in the print, the plate must
be as smooth as possible before the etching and engraving processes
begin. Burrs are removed from the edges of the plate with a scraper.
The rough edges are then beveled with a file, as shown. Finally,
the edges are burnished with oil, making them smooth and unable
to hold ink.
