| Teaching
Research Skills: Innovative Strategies for Library Use Instruction
Imagine this scenario: you are faced with a sea of bored undergraduate
faces or a group of adult learners who haven't set foot in a library in 15
years. How do you begin to acquaint these users with library tools? How
can you teach them the necessary skills to do their research? We'll start
with a toolkit for training the trainer, then follow with an overview of
the hot new strategies that innovative library instructors are using. Then
we'll hear two stories from the front lines: 1) how one librarian teaches
concept mapping and active learning skills to undergraduates and 2) how
another librarian performs offsite library instruction for police
officers.
Moderator: Jo Cates, Northwestern University.
Speakers: Renée McHenry, Northwestern University;
Bonnie Osif, Pennsylvania State University; Hema
Ramachandran, Northwestern University.

| Issues Confronting Transportation Libraries
Transportation libraries have faced a number of issues this past year
-- the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Library was suddenly
closed and is now being sold and is now being sold, the Interstate
Commerce Commission Library is being drastically downsized and there was
concern over the possible termination of the IRRD database.
To discuss these and other issues confronting transportation libraries,
we've arranged an informal session at the Boston conference.
John Betz of the National Transportation Library, Inc. will join us to
describe his efforts to preserve historical data and publications
pertaining to freight transportation.
Also on hand will be Rolf Schmitt from the Bureau of Transportation
Statistics to talk about the National Transportation Library on the BTS
Web site. BTS is concerned with library closures as well as preservation
issues, and has expressed an interest in working with transportation
librarians to address these issues.
Session held: Marriott Hotel Division suite.
Speakers: John Betz, National Transportation Library,
Inc.; Rolf Schmitt*, Bureau of Transportation
Statistics.
