For fullest functionality, access NucatWeb using Microsoft Internet Explorer. Most features are available in Netscape Navigator 4.x, and many features work with Netscape 3.x. For a listing of functions that do not work in Netscape 4.x and 3.x, go to:

To connect to NUcat and TRAN via the World Wide Web, direct your graphic Internet browser to:

Telnet Access (Telnet service is suspended until further notice - 3/19/02)
NUcat and TRAN are accessible using telnet packages that support VT100, VT220, VT320, and VT420 terminal types. NU Technical Support Services (TSS) provides telnet software for the NU community, downloadable from the TSS Online Help Desk at

The telnet address for NUcat and TRAN is nucat.library.northwestern.edu (login and password are nusearch). Once connected, the database menu will appear. Choose Local Database to search for books, reports, and journals listed in NUcat, or select the Transportation Article File to search for magazine articles. To return to this menu screen from anywhere in the databases, type X and press Enter. To exit the system, type X and Enter from the menu screen, or logoff using the disconnect or logoff function of your telnet package.
Hours of Availability
The system is only inaccessible during the early morning hours on Sundays. Otherwise, NUcat and TRAN are available via telnet and the World Wide Web 24 hours a day.
