Communities Uniting to Confront HIV/AIDS in Africa:
Materials from the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies
T-SHIRTS
T-shirts with messages concerning HIV/AIDS have been produced by organizations, businesses, and governments in parts of Africa. Shirts are worn by activists during demonstrations, by members of AIDS organizations working in the community or by individuals seeking to educate people about AIDS awareness, prevention, and treatment.

South Africa
The front of a t-shirt produced by the Treatment Action Campaign
(TAC). This shirt has been worn by TAC activists protesting
the South African government and pharmaceutical companies
for not making generic, affordable versions of HIV/AIDS treatment
medications available to the public.

This shirt continues to be symbol of community activism around
the struggle to produce and distribute affordable AIDS treatment
medications in South Africa.

Uganda
A shirt produced by The AIDS Support Organization (TASO)
in Uganda. TASO began in 1993 by Noerine Kaleeba, who lost
her husband to AIDS. As the first AIDS organization in Africa,
TASO developed the model of community-based, home care for
both affected and infected persons.

South Africa
An AIDS awareness shirt produced and sponsored by South African
businesses and organizations including Cape Argus, Metropolitan,
Wola Nani Embrace, and radio station GHFM.
