What's New? | Featured Collection | Monthly Highlight Archives Tip | New Collections
What's New?:
Congratulations to the winners of our New Student Week tee shirt raffle. We were glad to meet all of you who stopped by during New Student Week, and we invite you to come back to the Archives any time for research or just perhaps to learn something about your new school.
Archives’ Janet Olson contributes to Deering Library: An Illustrated History. The book celebrates the 75th anniversary of the building. It chronicles Deering’s history and highlights its architecture and artistic details.
Harold S. Hulbert papers used for new book on Leopold and Loeb. Simon Baatz, author of The Thrill of It: Leopold, Loeb, and the Murder that Shocked Chicago (HarperCollins, 2008), used the psych profiles of the two killers as well as the ransom notes and other evidence collected in the case and now stored in the Archives’ Harold S. Hulbert papers. Images from the collection appeared in Smithsonian Magazine.
Archives launches On This Day in NU History. To celebrate the school’s past, the Archives has begun publishing an event from NU history each day. Check it out on our website.
Featured Collection:
Student Life: The Archives has an extensive collection documenting student life through the years. Among the notable items are scrapbooks from the late 1800s into the early 1900s, letters home, student diaries, and photo snapshots. These collections reveal not only how much has changed over the course of Northwestern's history—dance cards and ten-cent bus fare gone by the wayside—but, in enthusiasm for socializing and excitement to be taking life's next steps, also contain themes that are forever part of the student experience. Click here to take a look through some samples.
This Month's Highlight:
Northwestern has always been eager to offer advice to its incoming students. The idea of essential NU knowledge has certainly changed over the years, though. Take a look at this pamphlet to see what a freshman in 1956 would want to know.
Tip of the Month:
We have a full collection of Northwestern school newspapers dating back to 1871. So if you’re researching school history or looking for what caught students' attention in the past (try letters to the editor), they’re a great resource to check out.
