What's New?:
American Studies in the Archives. Professor William Haarlow has been bringing his American Studies class into the Archives for their research. Students in his History of Higher Education course were asked to use primary documents from the collections in their work and the Archives has been more than happy to help them find what they need. Among the variety of topics these students came up with were Latino/Chicano theatre, Northwestern's residential colleges, and the Women's Edition of the Daily Northwestern.
Navy V-7 Training Program Film. With the much appreciated help of Northwestern's Digital Collection department, the Archives is able to present a short film on the US Naval Reserves Midshipmen's School that was located on the campus from 1940-1945. The color film, shot by Lieutenant L. A. Wheeler, shows the trainees in a variety of drills and exercises, on land and at sea. See the film and learn more about the program here.

Featured Collection:
Chemistry Collections: Northwestern's chemistry department has been home to a number of prominent scientists through the years. The Archives has received many of their papers and this month we've compiled a listing of relevant materials, images, and outside resources on this notable department. Take a look, here.

This Month's Highlight:
Winter is upon us once again and with it every student begins to wonder if there could ever be enough snow to cancel class. In fact, snow has shut down studies four times. The Archives has compiled a handy guide to these and other school cancelations through Northwestern's history. If you're really in the mood for more Northwestern winter, check out a classic snowscape for your desktop in our Wallpaper Gallery.

Tip of the Month:
RSS Feeds. Both the Archives' blogs, What's New and On This Day in NU, give users the opportunity to subscribe to RSS feeds for automatic updates when new information is added. An RSS (Rich Site Summary) feed is unlike joining an email list, as subscribing to the feed does not provide the site with your information, but will keep you informed of updates. The most useful way to use RSS feeds is with a feed aggregator, such as Google Reader, Bloglines, FeedReader, or NewsGator. With an aggregator, you can subscribe to many feeds, and have all your updates display in one place, saving you time checking each site individually. For more information and helpful hints, check out the AARP's site on RSS feeds.

The Archives has nearly 1000 processed collections and thousands of linear feet of material. Browsing our website can help inspire choices of topics for research or general-interest purposes. Check our Finding Aids site for information about processed collections; our History and Traditions pages and Exhibits sites provide some great ideas; and browse through past entries in our This Day in NU History for items that pique your interest. As most of our holdings are not listed in the library catalogue, we encourage inquiries by those looking for primary source documents.

For example, a sampling of topics pursued in the past month include:

  • Integration of women and minorities into the military
  • History of construction and expansion at NU
  • Japanese-American students during World War II
  • Faculty Get in Touch With NU:
Faculty are always welcome to bring classes in to the Archives to use our primary sources or find out about NU history. Archives staff can also travel to the classroom. During the past few weeks, Professors Eugene Lowe, William Haarlow, and Jacqueline Stewart have taken advantage of this opportunity for information about NU history and about our film holdings and their preservation.
