What's New?:
Jason Nargis joins the Archives team: The University Archives is pleased to introduce Jason Nargis, who joined us in December as a project archivist. Jason has an MLIS from the University of Michigan with a specialization in Archives and Records Management, and is completing a complementary degree in Museum Studies from the same institution. His experience includes two years as Library Associate at the U of M School of Public Health Library and Informatics. He recently completed an internship at the Chicago History Museum, where he worked on future exhibits on Chinatown and on the social history of magic. We're hoping he can work some magic in the University Archives, processing collections, extending our Web 2.0 tentacles, and undertaking myriad special projects.
Abe Peck Collection: Notable journalist and former Medill professor Abe Peck has graciously donated his papers to the Archives. Peck is known for documenting the rise of the underground press and counterculture of the 1960s. The collection includes Peck's notes, correspondence, publications, underground press files, and interviews with famous figures dating back to 1964.

Featured Collection:
Tony Randall Papers: The award-winning actor and Northwestern alumnus donated some of his papers to the Archives before he died. Among the collection are press clippings, publicity photographs, and, highlighting Randall's time as a student, his course notebooks. This month, we're featuring highlights from the notebooks, including the young Randall's frequent sketches of acting great John Barrymore, and photographs of Randall at Northwestern. View this exhibit here.

This Month's Highlight:
Northwestern students are no strangers to pranks. Learn about the time the Northwestern football team tricked an entire Wisconsin town into believing one of their players was famous politician William Jennings Bryan. Read the full story here.

Tip of the Month:
A Guide to Using Archives: The Archives' Janet Olson has prepared a guide full of helpful hints for anyone trying to learn how to use an archives. She covers locating archival resources, planning a visit to an archives, accessing archives online, and other useful research reminders. Read this informative guide here. (Adobe .pdf format)

Upcoming Event:
February 19, 3-4 pm: "Primary Sources, the University Archives, and You": With the primary-source materials in the Archives (including yearbooks, student newspapers, letters, diaries, scrapbooks, faculty papers, records of organizations, photos, and more), you can uncover the stories behind Northwestern traditions, explore how student culture has changed over time, and investigate the role of the University, past and present. This workshop, targeted towards undergraduates, describes the University Archives’ holdings and suggests ways to incorporate archival materials into course projects.
Location: Library Reference Classroom (Room 2699A on Level 2 East, University Library). For more information: Janet Olson, (847) 491-3136 , j-olson@northwestern.edu.
Registration: Click here to register for this workshop. (Registration is suggested but not required.)

A sampling of topics pursued in the past month include:

  • Northwestern's Life-Saving Crew
  • The African Diaspora
  • The role of dance in Progressive-era settlement houses

The Archives has nearly 1000 processed collections and thousands of linear feet of material. Browsing our website can help inspire choices of topics for research or general-interest purposes. Check our Finding Aids site for information about processed collections; our History and Traditions pages and Exhibits sites provide some great ideas; and browse through past entries in our This Day in NU History for items that pique your interest. As most of our holdings are not listed in the library catalogue, we encourage inquiries by those looking for primary source documents.
