CIS Index to
The CIS Index to U.S. Executive Branch Documents 1789–1909 is based on the Checklist of U.S. Public Documents, which was the only systematic attempt to supply a complete listing of all the documents published by the U.S. Government in its first 120 years. The set contains almost 200,000 publications of various types such as, annual reports, circulars, instructions, decisions, and bulletins. Documents that appear within the U.S. Executive Branch Documents 1789-1909 are not duplicated in the United States Serial Set.
The 1789-1909 Index and its companion microfiche is issued in six parts, divided by issuing agency as follows:

The CIS Index to U.S. Executive Branch
Documents 1910-1932 covers the full spectrum of materials issued by the more
than 650 bureaus and offices of Federal executive departments and independent
agencies in existence during the period 1910-1932, and holds numerous
publications, such as bulletins, circulars, and annuals. Materials excluded are; the GPO Monthly
Catalog, reprints, separates, ephemera and Executive Branch information
published in the U.S. Serial Set, U.S. Statutes at Large, and the CIS Index to
Presidential Executive Orders and Proclamations. Due to its large size and availability the Patent
Office’s Official Gazette and the Specifications and Drawings, and the
Copyright Office’s Catalogue of Copyright Entries have been omitted. Coast and Geodetic Survey Maps and some other
classes of Maps have also been excluded due tremendous volume and difficult use
on microfiche.
The 1910-1932 Index and its companion microfiche is issued in seven parts, divided by issuing agency as follows:

Each part of the Index for both year ranges includes the following sections:
Reference Bibliography,-provides a
full bibliographic data listing, and subject matter annotations or brief
abstracts, describing articles and other items contained within larger works.
Index by Subject and Names,-provides access to documents by names of the
authors who prepared them, the agencies that issued them, and the subjects they
examine.
Index by Superintendent of Documents
Number,-provides access to each document targeted for inclusion in the
collection through SuDoc numbers.
Index by Titles,-provides access
to publications through titles.
Index by Agency Report Numbers,-provides
access to publications by the numbers assigned by the agency that issued
them.
Holdings
The CIS Index to U.S. Executive Branch Documents is held in the Congressional Area of the Department’s Reference Room under the call number 015.73053 C579. Its unclassed companion microfiche collection produced by Congressional Information Service, Inc, is held in the microfiche cabinets in the Department’s Map Room.
