Reference and Instruction

Art librarians Cara List and Karyn Hinkle welcome opportunities for individual and group research assistance, instruction, and consultation. Please contact them to set up an appointment.

Located in the Martin Reading Room are three networked public workstations, as well as two flatbed scanners, color and black- and-white printers, and color and black-and-white photocopiers, which also allow for scanning and electronic delivery. Both the Martin Reading Room and the Architecture Reading Room are equipped with wireless access to the NU network and outlets for laptops. Information on prices for copying and printing, as well as wireless network access is available here.

The Art Research Center

Study space in the Art Research Center, adjacent to the Art Library reading rooms on the third floor of Deering Library, is available to Art History faculty and graduate students on a first-come, first-served basis. To request a carrel shelf in the Art Research Center, please complete an application. More information on the administration of carrels in Northwestern University Library is available here.

Images and Scanning

For help with digital images, please contact the Art Library, or consult the Digital Images guide. For information about digitizing images, audio, or video materials, please contact the Digital Collections Department

Circulation Policies

Most items in the Art Library circulate to Northwestern University Libraries patrons. A self-checkout station is located at the Art Library service desk. Two photocopiers, scanning stations, and hold shelves are available for patrons who prefer not to take materials out of the library.

Loan periods and overdue fines are the same as for books in the main University Library. Please take precautions against damage—protect books from moisture, do not place Post-it notes on pages, do not dog-ear pages, do not crack spines, and keep books away from food, beverages, pets, and art supplies.

To be properly checked in at the end of a loan, all books must be returned at the main Circulation desk at the University Library, or at one of the book drops. Overdue fines may apply if checked-out materials are returned or left unattended in the Art Library.
