NU at MLA

Three members of the Music Library's staff attended and participated in the Music Library Association's Annual Conference in Memphis, Feb. 22-26. Jeanette Casey completed her four-year term as Chair of the Personnel Subcommittee, which this year again sponsored the Resume Review Service to assist librarians in improving resumes and cover letters. Michelle Cronquist attended various sessions on music cataloging and also attended the Music OCLC Users Group Annual Conference held prior to MLA. As a member of the 2007 MLA Program Committee, D.J. Hoek attended meetings relating to next year's conference as well as the 2008 conference, for which he will be Program Chair. D.J. also served as a member of the Personnel Subcommittee and participated in the Resume Review Service.

Since 2006 marks MLA's 75th year, the conference featured a number of special events, including the premiere of Shakin' by School of Music faculty member Augusta Read Thomas. This new piece for orchestra was co-commissioned by MLA and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in honor of MLA's 75th anniversary. Along with the work's premiere by the MSO, Ms. Thomas and MSO Director David Loebel participated in a panel moderated by Don Roberts, former Head of the Music Library and a past President of MLA. In this session, Thomas and Loebel discussed the collaborative and creative efforts behind Shakin', and Don was proud to note that both Thomas and Loebel are not only NU alumni but also former student employees of the Music Library.
