Regulations Governing the Use of the University Library

All users of the main University Library and its branches must comply with these University Library regulations. In addition, all visitors are required to register as they enter the Library. Other policy statements and regulations concerning the use of specific areas and branches of the University Library are available at the corresponding service desks. The general regulations listed below apply unless specific exceptions are noted in individual policy statements of branch libraries.

  1. During the fall, winter and spring quarters, access to the Libraries after 5 p.m. on weekdays, after 12 noon on Saturday and all day Sunday is limited to members of the Northwestern community who must show their current Northwestern I.D. card for admittance.
  2. Consumption of food and beverages is not permitted in the University Library except in the Student Lounge and the Level 1 lounge of Deering Library. Alcoholic beverages and hot food are prohibited. Other beverages and cold food, in sealed containers only, may be brought into the Library for individual consumption. No food or beverages may be distributed in the Library except through authorized vending machines.
  3. Smoking is not permitted in the University Library including Deering.
  4. Dogs and other pets, except service animals, are not permitted in the Library.
  5. Bicycles will be removed from the Library area if not placed in the bicycle racks provided. Roller skates, skate boards, etc. may not be used in the Library.
  6. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on the Library Plaza.
  7. Users are reminded that the Library is designed primarily for serious study and research. Conversations should be confined to lounge areas.
  8. Non-circulating library materials are to be used only within the department or area in which they are housed. Exceptions may be made for persons with disabilities.
  9. Northwestern University students, faculty and staff have priority over all other library users for access to library collections, services, and facilities.
  10. The borrower is responsible for library materials charged to the NU I.D. card. Please exercise the same precaution with library materials as you do with a credit card and your personal valuables.
  11. IF THE FIRE EMERGENCY ALARM BELL IS ACTIVATED, GO TO THE NEAREST EXIT OR FOLLOW DIRECTIONS OF LIBRARY STAFF MEMBERS, PUBLIC SAFETY, OR EVANSTON FIRE AND POLICE OFFICIALS.
  12. Flashing of the lights is the signal which indicates that the main Library is closing. The lights are flashed 15 minutes and 5 minutes before the Library closes. In addition, bull horns are used on Levels 3 to 5. Prepare to leave the building immediately after the first signal has been given. The elevators are shut down promptly at closing time. For closing procedures in Deering departments and in branches, ask at individual service desks.
  13. When users leave the building, all library materials must be displayed to the exit attendant who verifies that the date due slip corresponds with the item. Cases, bags, purses and other parcels must be displayed for inspection. ATTEMPTED THEFT OR MUTILATION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS WILL RESULT IN HEAVY PENALTIES. SUCH PENALTIES CAN INCLUDE:
    • Suspension for N.U. students.
    • Termination of employment for non-student members of the University Community.
    • Criminal charges for non-Northwestern individuals.
