Hours

The McCormick Library's hours vary with the academic year. View a current list of Northwestern Library department hours here.

Location

The McCormick Library is on level 3 of the Deering Library. To visit us, enter the Main Library building and follow signs directing you to Deering. For vistitors who have difficulty climbing stairs, elevator access may easily be requested from a staff member in the Government Publications department located on level 1 of the Deering Library.

Access

No special credentials or permission is necessary to use our materials. We are open to both the general public and the entire Northwestern University community. We do suggest to researchers visiting from outside the area that you contact us before your visit so we may verify that we have what you seek.

Procedures and Services


Requesting a Book

The great majority of our titles are cataloged and their records may be located on . Our books do not circulate and must be used within the Jens Nyholm Reading Room. To request an item simply fill out one of our call slips and give it to a staff member at our reference desk to be paged. Typical turn-around time is less than five minutes. The number of works you may use simultaneously may be limited. Works you wish to consult again in the near future will be held on our hold shelf upon your request.

Photocopying

Permission to photocopy must be requested from a staff member at our reference desk. Because of fragility or other reasons some items may not be photocopied.

Photocopies may also be ordered remotely. The charge for this service is 35 cents per page, plus shipping costs.

Copystand Photography

Those desiring to make photographic reproductions of McCormick Library materials may reserve our copystand. You must provide your own camera, film, and bulbs. If this is not possible or desirable for you, or if you are making a request from outside the area, you may also order photographs to be made for you by our staff. We are now only producing digital images.

Microfilm Copies

In cases where photocopying is not possible (due to fragile condition) or reasonable (due to length) ordering a microfilm copy is a possibilty. Current charges are $160.00 for a 500 frame reel, or $60.00 for a copy of a previously existing microfilm, with additional shipping fees if relevant.

Digital Images

Digital images of McCormick Library materials may be ordered at a cost of $20.00 per image. These can be delivered via email, ftp, or disc.

Audio Tape Copies

Copies of cassette recordings may be ordered at a cost of $50.00 per cassette.

Special Fees

Commercial Use Fee: $100.00 base fee. Additional charges may apply depending upon specific uses. Please consult a McCormick Library staff member for information.

Shipping: $5.00 (domestic, under 1 lb)

Rush processing: Cost doubled

Class Visits

Instructors wishing to use our materials during class sessions may schedule the use of our Joseph Spear Beck Angling Room. The room can accomodate groups of up to about 16 people and allows for group discussion in a comfortable setting. The instructor must be present during these sessions and various security protocals respected. Reservations must be made in advance by contacting one of our staff.
