Getting Available Items

Find an available book in the stacks, or we will find it for you. The Libraries will pull available materials for pickup or delivery. 

Request materials for pickup

Any library user may request that available, circulating items from University or Deering libraries (excluding items on Course Reserve) be placed on hold at the University Library Circulation Desk or at other Northwestern Libraries. This is also called "paging" a book, and it can be done through NUsearch.


  1. Sign in to Your Account with your NetID or username and password.
  2. Click on the "Get It" tab in the search results, and then select "Request" from the request options.
  3. Select the desired Northwestern library from the "Pickup Location" drop-down menu.
  4. Requests are processed instantly by the system. If you are blocked from submitting a request, please contact the Main Circulation desk at 847-491-7633 or by email.

You can also use our Interlibrary Loan to request scans of most articles or book chapters held in print at Evanston campus libraries. Learn about this service.

Request material for delivery

Evanston faculty may request delivery of items (excluding items on reserve) to their campus office. 

Items are checked out immediately before they are shipped via University Mail Services. Note that University Mail does not operate on weekends. Take this timing into account when borrowing time sensitive items or those with shorter loan periods, such as multimedia items.


  1. Sign in to Your Account with your NetID or username and password.
  2. Click on the "Get It" tab in the search results, and then select "Request" from the request options.
  3. Select the desired "Office deliver: Work Address" from the "Pickup Location" drop-down menu. Supply the campus address in the "Comments" field.

You may return items via mail, including University Mail Services. Multimedia items must be sent in bubble envelopes or packaging in which they were delivered. 

Delivery to long-distance patrons

Article and book delivery is available for some members of the Northwestern community who are not currently on campus. This includes:

The Northwestern Libraries will borrow books and articles via Interlibrary Loan and send them to students. 


  1. Log in to Interlibrary Loan. (You may need to Create an Interlibrary AccountA Northwestern NetID is required to use this system.)
  2. Make requests. 

You are responsible for returning NU library books through traceable shipping methods offered through agencies and corporations such as the U.S. Postal Service and UPS.

Request uncatalogued materials

Some items are available for check-out, but are not yet listed in NUsearch, or are listed as "In-Process." Complete the Uncatalogued Materials request form to request the item for pick-up at one of our service desks. Back to top
