Conservation Residency

Northwestern University Libraries offer an advanced post-graduate conservation residency with a two-year appointment. This residency provides practical experience in a busy academic library conservation lab, balancing conservation treatment responsibilities with professional research activities and opportunities for supervisory experience.

The current conservation residency runs through August 2026. Applications for the next residency will open in Winter 2026 and will be posted to Careers. Please check back for more details.

The Preservation Department preserves library collections in all formats, including books, archival materials, audio, film, and digital collections. The department's in-house and vendor-based preservation services include shelf preparation, commercial binding, mass deacidification, microfilming, and digitization.

Northwestern University Libraries have robust preventive conservation programs that use indirect measures to prevent or minimize future deterioration or loss of cultural heritage. These programs include environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, and mass deacidification.

The department includes a conservation lab with conservators and technicians who perform a broad range of conservation treatments. In-house conservation services aim to preserve both general and special collections while also supporting a dynamic program of exhibits and outreach. All work adheres to the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
